Kelly Again on Things..as told to Today at the Suntec City Convention Centre
Nothing annoys American R&B star and former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland more than people prying into her private life.
Over the past year alone, she had to debunk rumours that she is pregnant while fielding questions from probing scribes eager to get the scoop on her aborted nuptials with American footballer Roy Williams.
"It's tough trying to get a grip on those kind of questions and people trying to know about your private life above everything else," Rowland told Today yesterday in an interview at the Suntec City Convention Centre.
She was in town to perform at Thursday night's Singapore Motorshow 2006.
"Thank god my life hasn't been exposed so much but I think my private life should stay just that. It's unfortunate that people don't see it that way," she said.
While the brief chat revealed a singer uneasy in the media glare, Rowland was all sugar and spice as she waxed lyrical about her life and family.
But even as she attempted to portray herself as nothing but normal, it's no surprise that people still clamour for an insider's glimpse into the life of the gregarious 25-year-old.
Her association with Destiny's Child has, after all, made her pop royalty.
The trio - comprising Rowland, Beyonce Knowles and Michelle Williams - ranks among the most successful girl groups of all time, having sold 60 million copies of their albums and singles worldwide. The group went their separate ways last year.
While the Grammy Award-winning Beyonce is undoubtedly the group's breakout star, Rowland hasn't done too badly for herself either: Her debut album Simply Deep sold over two million copies worldwide, a sign that she too can hold her own as a solo performer.
According to the singer, she is currently readying her second album, which is slated for release in April next year. But Rowland was in no hurry to downplay her associations with Destiny's Child.
"That group is a part of my history. So, I can never not talk about them," she said, laughing.
"I think no matter what I do people are going to compare what I do to Beyonce. So, it would be really silly for me to avoid that topic at all," she added, hinting that the trio has not ruled out a reunion.
But if reports are to be believed, all is not hunky dory among the girls.
Rowland's sophomore album was slated for release last June but there were rumblings that it was held back to make way for Beyonce's second album B'Day, which was released in September.
Not surprisingly, Rowland rubbished the reports, offering instead that she held back the album's release because she needed to refine the songs on an album she saw as too full of ballads and mid-tempo numbers.
"There is no competition. So, don't always believe what you read," she told this reporter.
"The media has to do their job and that is to create drama, even if it means creating things that aren't there. Right now, I'm just doing my thing and I am so thankful I have my family around to keep me grounded."
