TI ARRESTED BY ATF FOR POSSESSION OF MACHINE GUNS & SILENCERS
T.I. was arrested Saturday in Atlanta for possession of machine guns and silencers. While possessing licensed firearms is perfectly legal in the United States, and it is easy to own a firearm here, what queers the pitch for T.I. is that a prior conviction under felony drug charges in 1998 makes it mandatory for him not to have any firearms on his premises.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the arrest was conducted by agents of the ATF in midtown Atlanta. ATF member Marc Jackson said special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives were in possession of a federal search warrant to search the premises of T.I.’s College Park house.
The agents conducted the search of the premises on Saturday afternoon spending most of the afternoon there in the process. The search continued for quite a while, and by 7:30 p.m. the agents had collected substantial amounts of evidence in boxes and bags. Agents involved in the search said their efforts had yielded six firearms in the closet in T.I.’s bedroom.
The firearms seized at T.I.’s house were in addition to the three firearms found in his vehicle at the time of his arrest. Neighbors termed the arrest unfortunate, adding that they realized what was going on the moment they saw the ATF jackets.
For T.I., the arrest could not have come at a more inopportune moment. He was arrested a few hours before his performance at the BET Hip Hop Awards ceremony scheduled to be held in Atlanta. The 27-year old rapper was scheduled to perform at the BET Hip Hop Awards ceremony, and also host a party at a nightclub in Atlanta at the end of the ceremony.
T.I. was supposed to be a big draw at the awards, and was a leading contender for the awards with nine nominations. The nominations included CD of the Year, MVP of the Year, and also Lyricist of the Year.
Dwight Thomas, T.I.’s lawyer, said in a statement his client was confident he would be able to clear himself of the charges leveled against him. Thomas said T.I.’s arrest was an unfortunate incident, especially considering the timing. The lawyer said along with T.I. at the time of his arrest was ‘his significant other’ and another young man.
T.I., whose original name is Clifford Harris, is a Grammy Award winner. A man of many talents, he made his acting debut in March, 2006, in ATL. He is also set to hit the big league in Hollywood, having bagged a role in American Gangster, a movie that has such heavyweights as Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington.
Besides, T.I. is also a spokesman for American automobile major Chevrolet. He has rapped there and also raced with Dale Earnhardt, Jr., the All-American star of NASCAR. (source)
