Lemlem Clothing available at JCREW
Liya Kebede is a mom, supermodel, and a UN ambassador. If she can’t do it, it can’t be done.
She’s just launched a clothing line called Lemlem (it means “flourish” in Amharic) that creates economic opportunities for African artisans in her native Ethiopia. Men do the hand-weaving; women do the intricate embroidery. The boys’ and girls’ garments — from sweet sundresses to bloomers to caftans — are made of easy-to-care-for cotton. The collection also includes scarves for moms. So everyone will be sartorially splendid this spring.
Lemlem is going mainstream with a small collection of girls’ clothes available from all-American J. Crew. Right now there are only six items to choose from on the J. Crew Web site (and one of them is a scarf for mom, $80), but the artisanal nature of each piece likely makes production limited. They’re not cheap, either, with an embroidered dress for $158 (above left) and a sundress for $138 (above right). There is also a skirt at $98(directly below), a girl’s hoodie for $150 (above) and a pretty party dress for $175 (photo at bottom).
